DIY: Learn to Make A Sticker In Canva From Scratch

Let’s make a sticker on Canva from scratch! You can definitely use one of the many sticker templates that exist. However, this will be a tutorial for making your own sticker 100% from scratch.

Step 1: Access Canva

Go to the Canva website (www.canva.com) and log in to your account. If you don't have an account, you can sign up for free. However, to save your sticker with a transparent background (a PNG file) you will need a Canva Pro subscription.

Step 2: Create a new project

After logging in, you'll be taken to the Canva dashboard. Click on the "Create a design" button located at the top right corner of the page. In the dropdown menu, you'll see a list of design types. Scroll down to find "Custom dimensions" and click on it.

Step 3: Set sticker dimensions

In the "Custom dimensions" window, enter the dimensions for your sticker. For instance, you might enter 3 inches (width) by 3 inches (height) for a square sticker.  You can change this to whatever you’d like, just experiment with your dimensions to see!

Ensure that the unit of measurement is appropriate for your project (inches, millimeters, pixels, etc.).

Step 4: Design your sticker

Now you'll be inside the Canva editor, where you can design your sticker. Here are the steps to follow from here:

a. Add background: Click on the "Background" tab in the left sidebar. You can choose a solid color, or gradient, or upload an image as your sticker's background.

b. Add elements: Use the "Elements" tab on the left sidebar to add various design elements to your sticker. Canva provides a wide range of shapes, lines, illustrations, icons, and more. Simply drag and drop the elements onto your canvas.

c. Add text: Click on the "Text" tab in the left sidebar to add text to your sticker. You can enter your message, choose from various fonts, and adjust the font size, color, and alignment. To make the text stand out, consider using a contrasting color or adding a text-shadow.

d. Upload your own images or find one in Canva: If you have images you want to include in your sticker design, click on the "Uploads" tab, and then select the image files you want to use. You can resize and position the images on your canvas.

e. Arrange and layer elements: Use the drag-and-drop feature to arrange and layer elements on your canvas. To adjust the layering order, right-click on an element and select "Arrange," then choose to bring it forward or send it backward.

Step 5: Preview and save

Once you're satisfied with your sticker design, it's time to preview and save it:

a. Preview: Click on the "Preview" button at the top right corner of the Canva editor to see how your sticker will look.

b. Save: Click on the "Download" button located at the top right corner of the Canva editor. Choose the format you want, such as PNG for a sticker with a transparent background, or JPG for a sticker with a solid background. Then click on the "Download" button to save the sticker design to your computer.

Now, If you are creating a sticker to reuse digitally, in your Instagram stories, or to lay over other photos, etc. then you will be able to layer your sticker as its own image over the post.  You can watch my Tik Tok on how I overlaid a custom sticker here!
